The Piva river is located in the north-western part of Montenegro, at the foot of Mount Visoka and Maglic and the Durmitor mountain massif. The Piva lake is made artificial due to the hydroelectric power plant, and the dam is with its 220 meters high, one of the largest in Europe. The lake is 45 km long and in some places deep 200 meters.

Lake Piva was created in 1975 after the Piva River was blocked by the construction of the hydroelectric Mratinje Dam, flooding Piva Canyon. The 180m deep lake is tremendously beautiful, but take the time to explore the nearby Piva Monastery - rebuilt brick-by-brick in 1982 after a further reservoir meant it had to be moved.
